Using drones for precision farming will decrease farming costs and water usage/contamination

A great article on Next Big Future about drones and precision farming. I think we tend to forget that efficiency is in everyone's interest, from a standpoint of cost of operation for everyone from the farmers to the customer. The losers may be government taxes on bulk and also some job losses, but the drones will require operators and secialists ot repair them. Most will require trainers to introduce best use concepts.
Looking decades out, I have to wonder how quickly these sensors can be adapted, not just for drones, but for small farmette and cooperative farms. There seems to be quite a shift going on as middle-income family farming fails towards corporate farming which seem to be influencing more backyard gardening.
My questions:
- Will this technology scale down to such a small production? How inexpensively?
- Will we reach the point where phones can detect this via their camera sensor or some other add-on?
- Will this to lead to better indoor gardening via options such as hydroponics, living-walls, etc..?
Regardless, if this can be done through simple imaging, it's quite a feat.
